Holiday Season Driving Tips in Thailand
December 20, 2025
Thailand's holiday season, particularly around New Year and Songkran (Thai New Year in April), sees a massive increase in road traffic as millions of people travel to visit family and popular tourist destinations. Here's how to stay safe during these peak periods.
Plan ahead. Book your rental vehicle well in advance, as demand spikes dramatically during holidays. Popular routes become heavily congested, so plan your departure time to avoid the worst traffic. Early morning departures are generally best.
Allow extra time. Journeys that normally take 4 hours may take 6-8 hours during holiday periods. Build generous buffers into your schedule and plan rest stops every 2 hours to stay alert behind the wheel.
Stay alert for hazards. Holiday periods unfortunately see an increase in accidents, often involving fatigued or impaired drivers. Stay defensive, maintain a safe following distance, and be especially cautious at intersections and overtaking zones.
Avoid overnight driving. The most dangerous driving hours are between 10 PM and 6 AM. If possible, complete your journey during daylight hours when visibility is best and you're most alert.
Check road conditions. The Department of Highways website and local traffic apps provide real-time updates on congestion, accidents, and road closures. Keep your phone charged and a car charger handy.
Stock up on essentials. Carry plenty of drinking water, snacks, a phone charger, and any medications you might need. Petrol stations and rest stops can be very crowded during holidays, so keep your fuel tank above half full.
Emergency contacts. Save the QC Leasing 24/7 hotline, the Tourist Police number (1155), and the Highway Police number (1193) in your phone. Our team is available around the clock to assist with any issues during your rental.
We wish all our customers safe and happy travels during the holiday season. Drive carefully and enjoy the journey!
