Understanding Car Rental Insurance in Thailand
December 10, 2025
Insurance is one of the most important aspects of renting a car, yet it's often the least understood. Here's a clear guide to the types of coverage available when renting a vehicle in Thailand with QC Leasing.
Compulsory Motor Insurance (CMI). All vehicles in Thailand must carry CMI, also known as Por Ror Bor insurance. This provides basic coverage for bodily injury to third parties. Every QC Leasing vehicle includes active CMI as standard.
Voluntary Motor Insurance. This is the comprehensive coverage that protects both you and your vehicle. Thailand's voluntary insurance is categorised into several classes:
Class 1 (Comprehensive). This is the highest level of coverage and is included with every QC Leasing rental. It covers damage to your rental vehicle, third-party vehicles and property, bodily injury, and theft. This gives you complete peace of mind on the road.
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW). Our CDW reduces your excess (the amount you would pay in the event of a claim) to a minimal amount. For most vehicles, the standard excess is 10,000-30,000 Baht, but our CDW can reduce this to as little as 5,000 Baht.
Personal Accident Insurance. This covers medical expenses and compensation for the driver and passengers in the event of an accident. QC Leasing includes basic personal accident coverage, with options to upgrade for higher limits.
What's NOT covered. Standard insurance typically does not cover driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, using the vehicle for illegal purposes, damage caused by driving on prohibited roads, or loss of personal belongings from the vehicle.
Filing a claim. In the event of an accident, contact QC Leasing's 24/7 hotline immediately. Do not move the vehicles until police arrive (for accidents involving injury) and document everything with photos. Our team will guide you through the entire process.
If you have any questions about insurance coverage, our team is always happy to explain your options in detail before you drive away.
