The Ultimate Phuket Road Trip Guide

The Ultimate Phuket Road Trip Guide

January 20, 2026

Phuket is one of Thailand's most popular destinations, and having your own vehicle is the best way to explore beyond the tourist hotspots. Here's our ultimate road trip guide to getting the most out of Phuket by car.

Getting started. Pick up your rental car at Phuket International Airport or from our local office. We recommend an SUV or compact car for the island's hilly terrain and narrow coastal roads.

Day 1: Old Phuket Town. Start with the colourful Sino-Portuguese architecture of Old Town. Stroll along Thalang Road, sample local street food at the weekend market, and visit the Thai Hua Museum to learn about the island's rich cultural heritage.

Day 2: Southern beaches. Drive south to Rawai and Nai Harn Beach, two of the island's most beautiful and less crowded beaches. Stop at the Promthep Cape viewpoint for a spectacular sunset panorama over the Andaman Sea.

Day 3: The west coast. Head up the west coast through Kata, Karon, and Patong. Each beach has its own character, from family-friendly Kata to the lively nightlife strip of Patong. Be sure to stop at the Big Buddha statue for breathtaking 360-degree views.

Day 4: North Phuket. Explore the quieter north, including Nai Yang Beach near the airport and the Sirinat National Park. The Blue Lagoon (Blue Tree Phuket) is a fun stop for families with water slides and activities.

Driving tips for Phuket. Roads can be steep and winding, especially in the hills between beaches. Drive carefully in the wet season (May-October) when roads can be slippery. Parking is generally easy outside of Patong. Keep your fuel topped up as stations are sparse in the north.
