Safety First: What to Check Before Driving a Rental Car

January 10, 2026

Picking up a rental car is exciting, but taking a few minutes for a thorough pre-drive inspection can save you from headaches later. Here's a comprehensive checklist to follow every time you collect a rental vehicle.

Exterior walk-around. Before driving off, walk slowly around the entire vehicle. Look for scratches, dents, cracked lights, or chipped windshield glass. Take photos or video of any existing damage and ensure it's documented on your rental agreement.

Tyres. Check all four tyres plus the spare for adequate tread depth and proper inflation. Look for bulges, cracks, or uneven wear that could indicate alignment issues. Confirm that a jack and wheel wrench are present in the boot.

Lights and signals. Test all lights: headlights (low and high beam), brake lights, indicators, reverse lights, and hazard flashers. Faulty lights are a common cause of traffic fines and can be dangerous at night.

Fluid levels. While QC Leasing meticulously prepares every vehicle, it's good practice to check the engine oil, coolant, and windshield washer fluid levels, especially for longer trips.

Interior checks. Adjust your seat, mirrors, and steering wheel to a comfortable driving position. Test the air conditioning, wipers, and horn. Familiarise yourself with the dashboard controls, especially if the car model is new to you.

Safety equipment. Confirm that the car has a fire extinguisher, warning triangle, and first-aid kit. In Thailand, these items are legally required in all vehicles.

Documentation. Ensure you have the rental agreement, insurance documents, vehicle registration copy, and emergency contact numbers. Save the QC Leasing 24/7 hotline in your phone for quick access if needed.

Taking these steps only adds a few minutes to your pickup but provides peace of mind for your entire trip. At QC Leasing, we encourage all our clients to perform these checks and our staff are always happy to assist.
